WHAT TO DO IN BUDAPEST? THE BEST TIPS
You are about to book a trip to Budapest, or you have already arranged everything but you are now wondering: 'What to do in Budapest'? Here are the best tips to make your trip to the Hungarian capital as enjoyable as possible.
You can check the following things one by one from your 'what to do in Budapest' list.
# 1 TAKE A DIP IN A BATHHOUSE
Budapest is known for its convenient location on top of natural hot springs. With no fewer than 120 of these springs, the Hungarian Capital is sometimes affectionately referred to as 'The City of Spas'.
Bathing is an important part of Hungarian culture and the history of the thermal baths goes way back in time. The Turks and Romans, for example, had baths constructed in order to relax or to be healed by the healing water. A number of these can still be visited. In later times the baths were provided with more and more pomp and circumstance, so that you can not only enjoy the warm water but also how the building looks like.
# 2 STROLL ACROSS THE CHAIN BRIDGE IN THE EVENING
The chain bridge is truly an icon in Budapest. The Hungarians are proud of this famous bridge and it shines on many postcards of the city. The Chain Bridge was the first bridge to connect the two different sides of the city - Buda and Pest.
Although it is certainly advisable to make the crossing via the bridge during the day, it is a must in the evening . Budapest is incredibly beautifully lit after dark and the view from the bridge of the illuminated city is really worth admiring. It is very impressive to see the city in its full glory.
# 3 TAKE A RIDE ON ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRAM LINES IN THE WORLD
For less than a euro you can take a ride with Tram 2. This tram takes you along the bank of the Danube and during the ride you can enjoy the most beautiful views of the Buda hills. You will also pass the imposing Hungarian Parliament building and you can take a look at the chain bridge from the tram.
The National Geographic Magazine therefore proclaimed this tram line 'the most beautiful in Europe' and it was placed 7th in the 'Top 10 of the most beautiful tram lines in the world'.
# 4 BUY FRUIT IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MARKET IN EUROPE
Not only does Budapest have one of the most beautiful tram lines in the world; the great market hall has been named the most beautiful market hall in Europe and has won important architecture awards.
When you walk into the market hall you immediately see why this building gets all this honor. The light through the many large and beautiful windows, the ceiling with the steel beams and the thousands of Hungarian 'Tsolnay' tiles make it a feast for the eyes.
Walk past the many stalls and pick up some fruit or fresh fish. An experience that makes you almost like a local, as the Hungarians themselves also make good use of this special market hall with its many stalls.
# 5 VISIT AN OPERA AT THE HUNGARIAN STATE OPERA
Many to do lists for things to do in Budapest have an opera. And rightly so! The Hungarian State Opera in Budapest is an opera house like an opera house should be: with ceiling paintings, beautiful baroque details and lots of red plush. Moreover, it is known for its good acoustics.
Unfortunately, the Hungarian State Opera is currently being renovated and it is still unclear exactly when the curtain will open again. Would you still like to visit an opera or other performance in Budapest? Then you can visit the Erkel theater, where the performances are now taking place.
# 6 DRINK LOCAL BEER IN A RUIN BAR
Ruin bars. Uh .. what bars? We do not know this concept in the Netherlands and it is really unique for Budapest. The Hungarians once thought it would be fun to start bars in disused buildings. It didn't stop at a bar, but many pubs and clubs followed.
In most ruin bars you will find the craziest things together; the furnishing is often a mess. And while that may not sound very tempting, it certainly is. You will certainly be amazed. And where better than to drink a local beer or schnapps?
Do you prefer to go during the day? That is also possible. You can just have a cup of coffee or drink something else.
# 7 ENJOY THE VIEW OF GELLÉRT HILL
In Budapest there are many places where you have a nice view of the city. But the designated one is on top of Gellért Hill, where the highest point of the city is located.
At 235 meters you can enjoy a spectacular view of both parts of the city: Buda and Pest. And that's not all, you will also find the Hungarian Statue of Liberty here. What is special about this statue is that you can see it high up on the mountain from a large part of the city.
# 8 TASTE THE HUNGARIAN (COFFEE) SPECIALTIES
The Hungarians have a rich coffee history. At the beginning of the twentieth century, more and more coffee houses came to the city. As a result, there were about 500 coffee houses around 1930. Writers, poets and artists gathered in a number of them. But the ordinary Hungarian also went there to drink coffee and hear the latest news and gossip.
In the second world war and during the communist regime, many of the coffee houses were unfortunately lost. But today some of them have been restored.
For example, go to Ruszwurm , which is the oldest coffee house in Budapest. Or visit New York Café another coffee house where you feel that time has stood still. This coffee house has a beautiful interior from the beginning of the twentieth century and was once voted the most beautiful coffee house in the world. # 9 IMAGINE YOURSELF BACK IN TIME AT THE FISHERMAN'S BASTION
What to do in Budapest? Go to the Fisherman's Bastion of course. You may know the white structure with its organic shapes and towers from the photos. But you also want to see and walk them in real life.
You really imagine yourself back in time here, especially if you meander up through the narrow streets with small cobblestones. And that's what it is meant to be: the Fisherman's Bastion was designed in honor of Budapest's millennial 'anniversary' to evoke a sense of history.
Of course it is also nice that you have a fantastic view of the plague side of the city. Especially at sunset it can be breathtakingly beautiful. Oh, and while you're there you can also visit the Matthias Church right away .
# 10 TAKE A CRUISE ON THE DANUBE
A trip to Budapest is not complete without a cruise on the Danube. This is one of the places with the best views of both banks of the Danube. You really see the city from a very beautiful perspective.
