TRANSYLVANIA SIGHTS - ITINERARY AND TIPS

Transylvania appeals to the imagination. The name has something interesting, some mysterious. The fact that Dracula would have resided here, in a castle where you half expect 24-7 thunderclouds to hang above and lightning bolts to come down, certainly plays a role. And to think that it is not even certain whether even any of the stories are true. Even without Dracula, places to visit in Transylvania you should definitely see with your own eyes. This region in Romania is the perfect place to spend at least 2 weeks. Here you can enjoy impressive castles, beautiful nature, colorful medieval towns and villages where time still seems to stand still. I'll take you to Transylvania and tell you which sights you should definitely put on your must-visit list.

Transylvania countryside sights

Not exactly the sights in Transylvania that everyone knows, but the most authentic: the villages where almost everything still looks just the same as 100 years ago. You haven't been to Transylvania without spending a few days in the countryside. We ourselves slept for a few days in a homestay in the area of SighisoaraIn this way you can experience how people live in their historic Saxon farms. Almost all of them have a vegetable garden and flower field at their house. There is also a stable with some chickens, a cow and a goat. The people here are almost self-sufficient and in these villages you will often only find a simple supermarket with only basic products, such as pasta and sandwich fillings. The main road users are the traditional horse and carts, on their way to the market or a field outside the village.

The Fortified Churches in Transylvania

In addition to the sleepy villages in Transylvania, where life takes its normal course, there are also the villages with a weather church. These fortified churches, from the time the Saxons settled in Transylvania, were used to defend themselves against outside attacks. Many of these fortified churches still stand proudly in the green hills scattered throughout Transylvania.

I think the one in Viscri is the best known and together with the one in Harman my favorite. What these two churches have in common is that there is a museum in the rooms within the gate, where you can see how the people lived here. The church itself in Viscri is without a doubt the most beautiful we have seen. The slanting light, the fading colors of the painted woodwork and the scent of incense made me really not want to leave. Luckily our kids persuaded me to climb the creaky stairs to the tower. What a view up there, 360 degrees green hills with medieval farmhouses here and there, scattered in the landscape.

The Peles castle in Sinaia is also well visited. Quite rightly so, because what a richly decorated and elaborately decorated summer palace this is. The location in the green foothills full of forests, of Bucegi National Park, is also really beautiful. Come again as early as possible if you want to enjoy all that splendor. You certainly won't be alone.

Do you want to discover a fairytale castle, where only a handful of other tourists find their way, compared to the above popular options? Then Corvin Castle in Hunedoara is your castle. In the west of Transylvania, this castle stands on a bend in a rippling river in a lovely hilly landscape. To get through the gate, you will first have to cross a high, wooden pedestrian bridge. Corvin is my favorite of the castles in Transylvania .
