10 things to do in Georgia during vacation
Of course you will start your journey in Tbilisi, the fascinating and atmospheric capital. Marvel at the mix of Turkish, Russian and state-of-the-art architecture, take a cable car up to one of the hilltops around the city and end your day at a terrace in the Old Town where you enjoy great Georgian cuisine.
2. David Gareja
Just an hour and a half's drive from Tbilisi is the David Gareja Monastery Complex. In a rugged steppe landscape you will find dozens of caves painted with frescoes. A fascinating place to stroll.
3. Kakheti
In the wine region of Kakheti you will find beautiful restored towns like Sighnaghi, and estates where the famous Georgian wine is made. You can taste them in many places, so if you like a glass of wine you should definitely go here during your Georgia holiday. This is also the place to sleep in guesthouses with the locals and enjoy the famous Georgian hospitality.
4. Kazbegi
Drive the spectacular Military Highway to Kazbegi, a mountain region in the High Caucasus with peaks of more than 4000 meters. Walk to the famous Gergeti church for great views of Mt Kazbegi.
5. Gori
In Gori you will find one of the most bizarre museums in the world: it is dedicated to Joseph Stalin, the Communist despot who was born here. His birthplace has been recreated and halls are dedicated to the "blessings" of his reign. Gori even has a large statue of this tyrant.
6. Martvili Canyon
On the way from Kutaisi to the High Caucasus, don't miss the Martvili Canyon. For millions of years, the Abasha River has carved a fantastic gorge here in limestone rocks, with caves and waterfalls. The calm water areas offer kayaking and swimming, as well as areas suitable for rock climbing and exploring spectacular caves.
7. Svaneti
Svaneti is an isolated mountain area in the High Caucasus, where you could hardly reach until recently. Hidden between peaks of more than 5000 meters are beautiful mountain villages in green valleys. You can walk fantastic multi-day mountain tours. You then spend the night in guesthouses, in people's homes. Or take easier day trips from the village of Mestia, where there are more tourist facilities.
8. Ushguli
From Mestia, take a four-wheel drive to Ushguli, Europe's highest village, and admire the watchtowers, which were once built to protect against countless blood feuds. Ushguli lies in the shadow of the Shkhara, at 5200 meters one of the highest mountains in Europe. The surroundings are breathtaking.
9. Gelati Monastery
Not far from the city of Kutaisi is the Gelati monastery, in a beautiful spot in the mountains. This is arguably one of the most beautiful monasteries in Georgia, due to its peaceful location and fantastic interior frescoes. A must during your vacation. Even if you may have become a little "monastery tired", this is still recommended.
10. Prometheus Caves
The Prometheus Caves are also easily accessible from Kutaisi. You take an easy walk through the six caves, past beautifully lit petrified waterfalls, and whimsically shaped rooms the size of a cathedral.
